Arsenal v Spurs – The London Derby!
North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur joined forces in November to work together on a special Premier League 4 Sport Badminton tournament.
Sixteen local children, eight per team attended the event at the St Mary Magdalene Academy in Islington, after being invited by Arsenal in the Community and Tottenham Hotspur Foundation coordinators, to take part in the tournament ahead of the following weekend's North London derby. The tournament consisted of predominantly doubles matches and were played to a really high standard.
They were joined by Olympic Badminton silver medalist Gail Emms who came to support the event and provided the youngsters with expert coaching tips and advice.
Laurelle Lake, a Year 8 student from the Arsenal Badminton club said: "It was a really good event, we had loads of fun. It was great to meet Gail Emms and the Tottenham players weren't sore losers when we beat them!
Ross McKinley, Arsenal’s PL4S co-ordinator said, “This event was really good fun. It was great to get together with Spurs and have a competitive but fun tournament. We are making lots of progress with our badminton programme (along with the Black Arrows BC) and we are hoping this will increase its success further. We were also so lucky to have Gail come along, she was excellent and a real inspiration to all the young people. We have some more events with Spurs and the other PL clubs coming soon which we are all really excited about."
