England take bronze medal in Delhi
Third seeds England took the bronze medal in the team event at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi today.
Nathan Robertson and Jenny Wallwork in the mixed doubles and Rajiv Ouseph in the men's singles produced the kind of form England could not produce in the semi-finals against India as they surged into a 2-0 lead against Singapore.
Robertson and Wallwork were always in control against Chayut Triyachart and Yao Lei, winning 21-13 21-15.
Then Ouseph, the European bronze medallist, repeated his US Open semi-final win over Derek Wong with a fine display, winning 21-15 21-17.
However, Ouseph still gave his fans a fright when he surrendered an 11-2 lead in the second game as Wong closed up to within two points at 15-13.
But Ouseph reasserted himself to take the second game and make it 2-0.
Elizabeth Cann, who has had to play every match so far, just couldn't get the better of Singapore's Xing Aiying in the women's singles and went down 21-14 21-12.
That left the two men with 100 England caps, Robertson and Anthony Clark, to finish the job.
And they defeated Triyachart and Hendra Waijaya 21-12 21--11 to give England the bronze medal to follow up their team gold in 2002 and the silver in 2006 when Robertson and Clark were members of both squads.
Team: Rajiv Ouseph, Carl Baxter, Nathan Robertson, Anthony Clark, Chris Adcock. Elizabeth Cann, Jenny Wallwork, Gabby White, Mariana Agathangelou, Heather Olver.
The gold medal match between top seeds Malaysia and second seeds India went to Malaysia 3-1.
