Leeds Met stars dominate Sussex National Elite Open
ANITA KAUR and Joanne Quay took two titles each on finals day at the Sussex National Elite Open at Olympos in Haywards Heath.
Leeds Metropolitan University star Kaur took the women's singles title at the third and final Elite tournament of the season with a 21-12 21-11 win as Munn Tzin Bong found a tougher semi-final taking its toll. While Munn took three games to get the better of Caroline Westley 21-18 16-21 21-16, Kaur proved too strong for Panuga Riou, winning 23-21 21-12.
Lim Kenn, another Leeds Met player and the recent Portugal International winner, took the men's singles title in the pick of the finals as he overcame Ben Beckman 21-15 18-21 21-14 in a repeat of their final showdown at the Wimbledon Elite.
Beckman shrugged off illness to compete and his semi-final against promising young star Toby Penty must have also taken its toll as he battled to victory 21-19 13-21 21-17 while Kenn eased past Joshua Green in his morning semi-final 21-18 21-10.
Top seeds Chris Langridge and Robin Middleton were overwhelming favourites in the men's doubles and they proved their superiority by beating Scotland's Paul Van Rietvelde and England's Ben Stawski 23-21 21-16 in the semi-finals then toppling Nathan D'Cruz and Joel Gayle 21-9 21-10 in the final.
Middleton, who won the Yorkshire and Wimbledon Elites with Mariana Agathangelou, had hopes of a Sussex title double as he chased a grand slam of Elite mixed doubles titles. But his hopes were dashed in the mixed final where he and Jessica Fletcher went down to Harry Wright and Joanne Quay 16-21 21-12 21-13.
Quay, the third Leeds-based Malaysian, took her second tile when she teamed up with Kaur to beat Tracey Baker and Catherine Grant 21-11 21-13 in the women's doubles final.
