Blair and Bankier give Olympic champions a scare in Jakarta
England's Robert Blair and Scotland's Imogen Bankier gave Olympic champions Lee Yong Dae and Lee Hyo Jung a fright before going down in their mixed doubles quarter-final at the Djarum Indonesia Open in Jakarta today.
Blair and Bankier, who won the Bank of Scotland International title in 2007 to start a climb into the world's top 15, lost the first game against the second seeds 21-12 but roared back in the second to lead 15-10 and worry their opponents.
But little by little the Koreans edged their way back and finally took the second game, and with it the match, 21-18 after a 30-minute contest,
Even so, another Super Series quarter-final appearance will scoop Blair and Bankier, the last GB hopes in Jakarta, more vital ranking points as they chase a return to the world's top 10.
In yesterday's new BWF world rankings they are No 12, right behind England's European champions Anthony Clark and Donna Kellogg at No 10.
Blair now heads for next week's Yonex Sunrise Malaysia Gold tournament, where he and Chris Adcock are fourth men's doubles seeds while Adcock and Gabby White are fourth mixed doubles seeds.
Rajiv Ouseph, Andrew Smith and Carl Baxter are in the men's singles. Smith is seventh seed and Ouseph is 11th seed. Baxter is determined to play in Johor Bharu despite being forced to retire injured in the Indonesia qualifying.
