SmashUp! (11 – 16-year-olds)

SmashUp! is a programme that largely caters for secondary schools with both a curricular and extra-curricular element. The extra-curricular format is predominantly games-based with minimal coaching.

It is designed to be fun, whilst allowing players to develop their skills through a variety of games. SmashUp! sessions are often delivered to music and provide opportunities for players to socialise between games creating a relaxed atmosphere.

The format works perfectly to provide an inclusive, engaging and dynamic badminton experience with clubs able to tailor their session specifically to run a SmashUp! session or just utilise the game cards to provide additional ideas as part of a normal junior session.

Junior Clubs

Is your child looking for somewhere to try out or play badminton and have a great experience? Then why not go along to one of the hundreds of junior clubs across the country. These clubs offer regular, fun, and inclusive opportunities for young people of all ages with many also providing coaching to help develop skills.

Find A Club

We all want the best for our children and want them to be happy in whatever they choose to do but what should you be looking for when you are selecting the best badminton club for your son or daughter to join? Any club that has the interests of young people at its heart will welcome you asking the right questions before you and your child together make the decision to join and feel the club is safe. Here are the types of questions you might want to ask:

  • Is the club affiliated to Badminton England?
  • Does the club hold Premier Club status?
  • Are the badminton coaches qualified?
  • What about coaches from other countries?
  • Does the club adopt the Badminton England Safeguarding Policy?
  • Are key club personnel DBS checked with Badminton England?

You can find out more about these questions and what to look for in our Safeguarding Guidance for parents.

Many junior clubs across the country cater for players as young as five years. They give them their first experience of the sport whilst developing key fundamental skills to help their overall development. Get in touch with your local club to find out what age groups they currently have set up.

Junior clubs cater for all ages and abilities, so your child does not need to have played before. Clubs are focused on providing a fun, safe and enjoyable environment for anyone that wants to pick up a racket and play.

Going along to a junior badminton club your child can expect a welcoming, fun and enjoyable experience. They will be able to learn a new skill, meet new friends and challenge themselves.

Your child is welcome to bring their own racket if they have one but this not essential. The club will have all the equipment that will be needed to ensure a fun, enjoyable session.

Junior Coaching

Coaching is a great way for your child to take up badminton and develop their skills. Many junior clubs across the country offer coaching in their junior sessions. If you were looking for something more specific to your child, you could arrange for a qualified coach to run a private lesson at a local leisure centre. Use our Coach Finder below to search for coaches local to you or take a look at the junior clubs section to find out more about your local clubs.

We all want the best for our children and want them to be happy in whatever they choose to do but what should you be looking for when you are selecting a badminton coach for your son or daughter? The badminton coaching workforce is extensive across the country and it can be confusing with the various coaching qualifications that coaches hold. So how do you choose the right coach for your child? Consider the following questions when selecting someone to coach your child:

  • Are they a Coaching Member of Badminton England?
  • Are they appropriately qualified to coach your child?
  • Do they have the appropriate knowledge, experience and interests to coach your child?
  • Can they connect with your child?
  • Have they completed the appropriate safeguarding training?
  • Do they have appropriate first aid training or support in place?

You can find out more about these questions and what to look for in our Safeguarding Guidance for parents.

Your child can expect a fun, enjoyable and welcoming experience when they take part in a badminton coaching session. Whether it is in a group or individual session you can be assured the coach will differentiate activity for their ability and ensure they are having fun while learning.

The specifics of what your child will learn in their coaching session will depend on their age and ability. It could include the fundamental movements and skills to start the game and progress to the learning tactics to help develop their game. For primary aged children coaches may use The Racket Pack programme for their sessions and for secondary aged children your child may take part in SmashUp! Activities.
